A Melbourne man is currently recovering in the hospital after playing a pivotal role in apprehending the individual who allegedly stabbed him. The incident unfolded around 4.30 pm outside Moonee Ponds Central shopping centre, where a dispute between two men, who were believed to be strangers, rapidly escalated into violence. The 44-year-old victim, a resident of Essendon, sustained stab wounds to the chest and neck during the altercation.
Acting Inspector Raj Tillekeratne reported that the victim, along with bystanders and security personnel from the shopping centre, successfully detained the attacker pending the arrival of the police. The assailant, a 55-year-old man from Fitzroy with a noted history of mental health issues, remains in police custody and is awaiting a medical evaluation before further questioning.
Following his detention, it’s reported that the suspect shouted “allahu akhbar,” which translates to “God is great” in Arabic. However, Tillekeratne clarified that the counterterrorism command had been notified, and there was no evidence indicating that the attack was motivated by religious or political factors. Authorities are treating the incident as a random act of violence.
The victim is currently stable at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and has been commended for his bravery by law enforcement officials, with Tillekeratne expressing that the situation could have been much worse. Given the circumstances, he emphasised that the victim is fortunate to have escaped with his life.
In response to this incident, police are ramping up patrols in the area to ensure community safety. As of now, no charges have been filed against the alleged attacker.
