South Sydney’s injury concerns have deepened following the early departures of young talents Peter Mamouzelos and Jye Gray during their heavy 30-4 defeat to the Newcastle Knights at Magic Round. The Rabbitohs faced the match without several key players, including Latrell Mitchell, who was serving a suspension, along with Jamie Humphreys, Mikaele Ravalawa, Cody Walker, Jack Wighton, Alex Johnston, and Cameron Murray, all sidelined due to injuries.

Jye Gray left the field in the 58th minute after sustaining a significant upper leg injury from a tackle by Kai Pearce-Paul. He was later reported to have a quad cork. Meanwhile, Peter Mamouzelos also experienced injury late in the match; he exited the game after struggling with his elbow while attempting a tackle on Leo Thompson. Observers noted his visible distress as he received medical attention on the field.

Commentator Andrew Johns highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasising the toll these injuries were taking on crucial team positions. Post-match, Rabbitohs’ coach Wayne Bennett confirmed that Mamouzelos had suffered a dislocated elbow, which medical staff were having difficulty treating on-site. Bennett expressed concerns that the team’s injury woes would continue, with few players expected to return before their upcoming clash against the Brisbane Broncos next week, aside from Mitchell coming back from suspension.

As the Rabbitohs grapple with this latest setback, Newcastle looks to build momentum following their decisive victory and is set to face the Titans in their next match.
