Brad Fittler has raised concerns about the apparent lack of “aggression” displayed by the Cronulla Sharks this season following their unexpected defeat to the Dragons. Despite having triumphed in ten consecutive matches against their local rivals, the Sharks faltered in a 22-14 loss at Kogarah Oval on a wet Saturday afternoon, where they were clearly outmatched in terms of energy and enthusiasm, particularly from Dragons captain Clint Gutherson.
The match has sent alarm bells ringing for coach Craig Fitzgibbon as the team’s disappointing performance comes at a critical juncture of the season. The Sharks recorded 15 errors and conceded eight penalties, struggling offensively and unable to capitalise on scoring opportunities.
Fittler highlighted that the Sharks have not exhibited their traditional aggressive style, particularly within their forward pack. He noted a lack of dynamism from the team, stating they “lumber out of the gates” rather than making an explosive start. His critique reflects concerns that the team has been unable to reach another gear during crucial moments.
While the Sharks possess aggressive talents like Addin Fonua-Blake and Briton Nikora, who excel in their roles, there’s been significant underperformance from the team’s spine, including halfback Nicho Hynes, contributing to an inconsistent campaign.
Darren Lockyer, another rugby league great, echoed Fittler’s sentiment, suggesting there’s an intangible element missing from the Sharks’ game. Despite recent struggles, Cronulla still has a reasonable chance of securing a finals berth with upcoming matches against the Titans and Knights. However, without a significant turnaround, their aspirations may fall flat.
Billy Slater weighed in, emphasising the unpredictable nature of the Sharks’ performances this season, pointing out their losses to lower-ranked teams like the Dragons and inconsistent showings against others. While Cronulla currently sits seventh on the ladder with 28 points—one victory ahead of the Roosters and Dolphins—they must improve to ensure they do not merely become an afterthought as the finals approach.
