Access to a laptop is often taken for granted by students, yet for many families, particularly those facing financial hardships, acquiring a new device can be a significant challenge, with prices starting around $1000. Doug Taylor, chief executive of The Smith Family, emphasises the crucial role that a laptop and internet connectivity play in educational success and future employment prospects. He notes that 83 per cent of students who gain access to a digital device exhibit improved academic performance compared to before.

The Smith Family, in partnership with social enterprise Work Ventures, is addressing this issue by refurbishing donated laptops and providing IT traineeships to assist students who lack access to technology. This initiative aims to support an estimated 1.2 million students in Australia without personal devices.

In a noteworthy collaboration, financial giant Deloitte has contributed 2000 laptops to the cause, prompting a call for other large businesses to follow suit. By boosting technology access and offering necessary training, this initiative aims to empower underprivileged students and help bridge the educational divide.

The challenge of equipping students with the tools they need is significant but, according to Taylor, it is certainly within reach of being resolved. For those interested in supporting this cause or learning more about Work Ventures, additional information is available on their website.
