Snowfall has commenced at Australia’s mainland ski resorts, just ahead of the official winter season, kicking off on June 7. Perisher, Australia’s largest ski resort, welcomed 15cm of fresh snow overnight, while other ski destinations reported lighter accumulations.
Despite forecasts indicating an “unfavourable” start to the snow season, improvements are expected as winter progresses, according to Weatherzone. Perisher expressed excitement for the snowfall, stating, “We’re stoked to have 15cm of fresh snow on the ground after a wild and windy 24 hours.” Additional snowfall is anticipated later this week.
Thredbo also experienced up to 4cm of fresh snow recently, with social media posts sharing images of “flakes falling in the village.” Snow is predicted again for June 3. Mount Hotham saw 3cm of snow, with the resort’s team proactively assisting with snowmaking due to cold temperatures. Further predicted snowfall is scheduled for June 3.
Falls Creek reported 4cm of fresh snow, transforming the village into a winter wonderland, while Mount Buller received 5cm of fresh snow as wild weather arrived. The resort’s spokesperson remarked on the timely snowfall, enhancing the winter atmosphere just ahead of the King’s Birthday long weekend.
With the countdown to the ski season well underway, these early snowfalls are promising for a successful winter season across Australia’s ski resorts.
