Australia’s chances of success in the upcoming Champions Trophy have suffered a significant setback, as fast bowler Mitchell Starc has chosen to withdraw for personal reasons. His absence adds to the list of already missing players, including Pat Cummins (ankle), Josh Hazlewood (hip and calf injuries), Mitchell Marsh (back), and Marcus Stoinis (retirement), leaving five vacancies in the original 15-man squad.
Cricket Australia recently finalised their squad for the tournament, which will take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9. Starc will also miss the two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting Wednesday in Colombo. Cricket Australia has expressed their support for Starc’s decision, emphasising his dedication to the team throughout his career.
The withdrawal of Starc, along with Cummins and Hazlewood, removes three key players who were instrumental in Australia’s 2023 World Cup victory. As the team aims for the Champions Trophy, they will rely on fast bowlers Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, and Spencer Johnson. Steve Smith will captain the side, stepping in during Cummins’ absence. The final squad includes Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa among others, with Cooper Connolly listed as a travelling reserve.
