AFL goal-kicking legend Matthew Lloyd has urged the Hawthorn Football Club to prioritise acquiring a star midfielder during the forthcoming trade period, citing it as their “biggest weakness.” Last season, the Hawks augmented their defensive lineup by acquiring Josh Battle and Tom Barrass; however, the current midfield contingent has faced significant challenges.

With key player Will Day sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a severe foot injury, Lloyd asserts that the team is lacking a crucial match-winner in the midfield. The Hawks do possess gritty players like Jai Newcombe, James Worpel, Conor Nash, and Josh Ward; nevertheless, they are missing the finesse typically provided by the injured Day.

Lloyd has expressed concerns about the Hawks’ potential for premiership contention unless they strengthen this area. He believes that head coach Sam Mitchell is adept at pursuing player acquisitions and would be surprised if the team did not aim to secure an A-grade midfielder during the off-season. “I think it’s their biggest weakness,” Lloyd commented on Nine’s Footy Classified, highlighting the void left by Day’s injury.

Lloyd advises that the Hawks should aim high in their search for a top-tier midfielder, suggesting they start by inquiring about players like Zak Butters. Butters, who is currently contracted to Port Adelaide until 2026, has been speculated to be considering a move back to Victoria.

Financially, Hawthorn is well-positioned with sufficient salary cap space and draft picks, including Carlton’s first-round selection for the 2025 draft, which could facilitate their efforts in the trade market. As it stands, the Hawks face the notable challenge of possibly becoming the first team in AFL history to miss the finals after securing 14 wins, depending on the outcomes of their remaining matches against Collingwood, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

In summary, as the trade period approaches, Hawthorn’s focus must be on addressing its midfield deficiencies, with Lloyd advocating for a bold approach in their player acquisitions to reinvigorate their title aspirations.
