Police in North Queensland are actively investigating looting incidents in flood-impacted areas and have increased patrols to combat these crimes. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes or take necessary precautions. Since Sunday, authorities have received multiple reports of looting and property damage, particularly in Ingham, Railway Estate, and Rosslea.
Townsville Superintendent Chris Lawson emphasised a zero-tolerance policy towards theft during disasters, expressing disgust at those exploiting the situation. Police have launched high-visibility patrols throughout North Queensland, focusing on deterring anti-social behaviour while community recovery efforts begin. Investigations are ongoing, and homeowners in affected areas are encouraged to report any suspicious activity.
The floods have caused widespread devastation, with reports of two casualties and a missing individual in Ingham. While Townsville residents who previously evacuated have been cleared to return home, Ingham remains largely submerged, hindering residents’ return. The Bureau of Meteorology indicates that while the worst of the rain has passed, thunderstorms are still expected. Premier David Crisafulli has reminded the community that the region remains under a state of emergency and has urged residents to heed safety advice from officials.
