A violent altercation erupted at Northlands Shopping Centre in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon, resulting in four youths being arrested, two of whom have already been released on bail. Security footage captured a teenager wielding a machete and attacking another individual in the food court, prompting chaos among shoppers.

Witnesses described alarming scenes as a little girl enjoying ice cream was swiftly taken into her mother’s arms for safety while onlookers ran for cover. Amid the turmoil, a bystander intervened, restraining the assailant and disarming him. The incident left one man collapsed with severe injuries, while police later indicated that the brawl had been orchestrated between rival gangs that had planned to meet up.

Desperate to restore order, shoppers were guided into storerooms, and one man named Anthony used a chair to defend himself during the fray. He successfully subdued the attacker until assistance arrived. In recognition of his bravery, police have proposed awarding Anthony for his courageous actions.

The instigators of the brawl, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old, were already on bail for serious weapon-related crimes. In addition, two other men aged 20 and 18 were taken into custody and subsequently bailed. A victim remains in hospital with serious head injuries, while three suspects are still at large. Deputy Commissioner David Clayton has called on any remaining culprits to surrender to authorities, assuring the community that more arrests are forthcoming.

Public sentiment has turned sharply, particularly among those who see a pattern of violence at the shopping centre. Just six months prior, a similar incident occurred, leaving a local resident’s partner injured during a machete robbery. Residents like Mykey O’Halloran have expressed frustration, demanding safer shopping conditions, stating that they refuse to let fear dictate their lives.

Concerns persist about the adequacy of security measures in place at Northlands Shopping Centre, where it reportedly took over 30 minutes for alarms to activate following the fighting. Vicinity Group, which manages the centre, has acknowledged the need for improved safety protocols. Support from local businesses has also been voiced, with cafe owner Bryan Jim asserting that Northland remains a safe environment. In response to the recent incident, an increased police presence is expected throughout the week to assure shoppers and staff alike.
