Shocking Report Reveals Penrith’s Underhanded Tactics with On-Field Trainers

Andrew Johns recently dismissed controversies around Penrith’s use of on-field trainers as mere “gamesmanship,” yet the Panthers’ growing history of such tactics is becoming concerning rather than amusing. Following their recent match against Gold Coast, NRL officials are expected to question the club after Penrith’s runner, Corey Bocking, intentionally obstructed Gold Coast’s kicker, Jayden Campbell, during a crucial conversion attempt. This incident marks the fourth controversy involving Penrith’s trainers in just three years.

In this particular match, Gold Coast held a narrow lead with Campbell preparing for a conversion that could have secured their victory. As he lined up, Bocking ran directly in his path, feigning an accident while smirking, which left Campbell infuriated as he missed the kick. This moment proved pivotal, as Penrith later equalised and ultimately triumphed in extra time. Coach Ivan Cleary claimed he hadn’t seen the incident, while Johns remarked that Bocking was well aware of his actions.

Penrith’s misdeeds are not isolated; in May, trainer Shane Elford faced a two-match suspension for deliberately wetting the ball before a crucial kick—an act that occurred in another golden point game. Despite this and similar past violations, the penalty received and potential deterrents for Penrith remain under scrutiny.

Notably, during the 2021 season, another trainer, Green, faced criticism for compelling referees to halt play, which allowed the Panthers to regroup during critical game moments. His actions led to a fine for the club and his dismissal for the season after an incident against Parramatta. He also faced backlash for allegedly sledging an opposing player during a game, leading to a complaint from South Sydney and a public defence from Penrith.

These repeated infractions raise the question: will the NRL’s response to the Panthers’ antics change their approach on the field? The ongoing scrutiny suggests fans and critics alike are eager for a resolution that ensures fair play in the future.
