Coastal communities in northern New South Wales are facing warnings of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding in the coming days, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. A low-pressure system is expected to affect these coastal areas as early as tomorrow, bringing with it moderate to heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, strong winds, and turbulent surf.

Predictions indicate that certain regions, including the Hunter, Mid North Coast, and Northern Rivers districts, could experience daily rainfall amounts ranging from 50mm to 100mm through the weekend. Wind gusts may reach damaging levels of over 90km/h along the northern coastal areas. Additionally, in the state’s central and northern ranges, there may be snowfall above 1000 metres, which could lead to transport disruptions due to icy road conditions.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan noted the uncertainty surrounding the exact timing and location of the impending weather system but confirmed the emergency service is making necessary preparations. Hogan emphasised that the SES is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology and will issue alerts as needed.

Past floods in May have heightened concern in the Mid North Coast, Northern Rivers, and Hunter regions, with the SES warning that flash flooding could recur this week. As residents brace for the storm, Hogan encourages them to remain vigilant and informed. They recommend downloading the Hazards Near Me app to set up alerts for their locality, while also keeping an eye on weather updates via the Bureau of Meteorology’s website.

For those needing assistance, the NSW SES can be contacted at 132 500, and for life-threatening situations, individuals are advised to call emergency services immediately.
