A 17-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter following a tragic incident involving a 59-year-old woman who was killed in an electric motorbike collision in Perth. The police report indicates that the teenager was riding the unregistered electric motorbike recklessly through the northern suburbs shortly before the fatal crash.
Witnesses in Edgewater expressed shock as first responders attempted to perform CPR on the victim while the teenager was detained by police. Authorities stated that the boy was riding erratically in the Woodvale area around 2.30pm, and during this time, he succumbed to several loss of control incidents, including riding at speeds exceeding 100km/h in a 50 zone.
The incident culminated when the boy allegedly struck the woman as she was walking through Picnic Cove Park. After the crash, he appeared in court facing multiple charges, including driving an unlicensed vehicle and having no authority to operate the motorbike, in addition to the manslaughter charge. He is currently in custody until his next court date.
Detective Sergeant Ollie Edwards noted a concerning trend of fatal accidents involving electric rideables in Perth, highlighting the potential dangers associated with their misuse, particularly in public spaces.
