More than a dozen individuals were rescued after being trapped in their vehicles for hours in the Mount Hotham region of Victoria. The State Emergency Service (SES) reported that over 20 people found themselves stranded near Hotham Heights due to significant snowfall—exceeding 50 centimetres—over the weekend.

The incidents occurred around 10:50pm as the group attempted to navigate the Blue Rag Range Track, close to the Mount Hotham ski fields. One vehicle rolled during the ordeal, resulting in minor injuries for one man, while several others remained stuck for approximately 19 hours. A fire truck also experienced difficulty during the rescue operation.

By 6pm on the same day, SES had successfully rescued thirteen people, although efforts were ongoing at that time. The Alpine Shire Council stated that the road was marked with signs and barricades indicating its closure; however, the physical gate had yet to be locked for the winter season, a procedure scheduled to be implemented that Thursday.

Will Jeremy, the chief executive of Alpine Shire Council, said they had taken steps to inform travellers before the weekend, but the formal road closure process required several days and agreements from multiple authorities, including Vic Pol and Parks Victoria. This was to ensure no one was inadvertently trapped inside the park.

In light of the severe weather, emergency services are urging motorists in alpine regions to heed warning signs and remain vigilant about road closures. The SES advised the public to reconsider travel plans in areas affected by heavy snowfall to ensure safety.
