Senator Jacinta Price has made the notable decision to leave the Nationals and align herself with the Liberal Party as it prepares to vote on a new leader. Representing the Northern Territory for the Liberals, Price also serves as the Coalition’s shadow Indigenous Australians minister.
Her shift from sitting with the Nationals to the Liberals will take effect in Canberra ahead of a pivotal party meeting on Tuesday. In a statement to Nine newspapers, Price expressed her commitment to advancing the interests of all Australians as a member of the Coalition, emphasising her belief that she will be more effective in the Liberal Party, particularly in light of the significant restructuring that lies ahead following the recent party challenges.
Price outlined her intention to help restore foundational values such as liberty, personal freedom, responsibility, the rule of law, free-market principles, and economic success, advocating for minimal government interference, fairness, and a deep-seated love for Australia.
The Coalition, which encompasses both Liberal and Nationals members, typically collaborates closely during parliamentary sessions, often voting in unison despite having distinct party leadership and meetings. Currently, key contenders for the position of opposition leader include deputy leader Sussan Ley, shadow treasurer Angus Taylor, and shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan.
Overall, Senator Price’s defection signals her desire to contribute actively to the revitalisation of the Liberal Party.
