Senator Jacinta Price, the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, has officially announced her candidacy for the role of Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and has voiced her support for Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor’s leadership bid. In her statement, Price emphasised the weight of her decision to switch party rooms, acknowledging the significant responsibility it entails.

Price expressed the necessity for the Liberal Party to reconnect with its foundational principles, stating, “Returning to our roots as a party is critical right now.” She highlighted that reinforcing these core values is essential to inspire and empower Australians nationwide.

Previously aligned with the Nationals, Price plans to sit with the Liberals when the party gathers on Tuesday. Her commitment centres on representing the “forgotten” Australians, reflecting on her own family background. She shared memories of her grandparents, who were not part of the elite and built their home with their own hands in New South Wales, instilling a vision for a promising future for their descendants.

The Northern Territory Senator articulated her pride in her Warlpiri heritage, noting how her grandparents transitioned from a nomadic lifestyle to settled community living as Australia evolved. She referred to them as the original ‘Aussie battlers’, highlighting their struggles and contributions.

As the Coalition prepares to elect a new leader, this pivotal vote is scheduled for Tuesday, coinciding with the swearing-in of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s new ministry. Taylor officially launched his leadership campaign earlier in the week, alongside Liberal deputy leader Sussan Ley, who is also in the running for the position.
