In a heartwarming debut, Queensland Senator Corinne Mulholland delivered her inaugural speech in parliament while cradling her infant son, Augie. Elected as a Labor senator in the May federal election, Mulholland acknowledged the challenge of timing, humorously noting that Augie’s bedtime was fast approaching.

During her address, she emphasised the experiences of parents across the nation, asserting that Augie was not just a prop but a potent reminder of her identity as a mother from Queensland’s outer suburbs. She stated, “Mums and dads fundamentally belong in this chamber” and highlighted the real-life chaos and joys that accompany raising children.

Senator Mulholland expressed her aspiration to bring a unique “mum energy” to the Senate, reflecting on her own experiences as a nursing mother on the campaign trail with a three-month-old. Recognising the struggles of working parents, she thanked those who have paved the way for greater acceptance of this reality in the workplace.

She called on her fellow parliamentarians to ensure flexible working conditions for families beyond the walls of parliament. Mulholland is dedicated to improving the lives of working families, advocating for real choices and flexibility in employment.

Despite the challenges of balancing motherhood and her parliamentary duties, she managed to complete her speech uninterrupted, although Augie eventually needed to be passed off to other members. This moment not only showcased her commitment as a new senator but also highlighted the evolving presence of parents in political spaces.
