A tragic incident occurred in Wantirna South on Thursday afternoon when a 91-year-old woman driving a Toyota Yaris lost control of her vehicle at approximately 12:20 PM AEST. The car veered off Coleman Road, smashed through a fence, and ultimately came to a halt against a park bench.
As a result of the crash, a 59-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 60-year-old man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, the man later succumbed to his injuries, leaving the community reeling from the loss. Additionally, a two-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in the accident.
Emergency services quickly responded, setting up a tent to cover the vehicle, which was located near play equipment in the park, highlighting the incident’s proximity to families enjoying the area.
The driver of the Yaris is currently hospitalised with minor injuries and has not yet been interviewed by authorities. Superintendent Justin Goldsmith indicated that she appeared to be significantly shaken by the incident. An investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing, with police working to determine whether a medical event may have contributed to the driver losing control.
Witnesses have reported that the vehicle was out of control for approximately 50 metres before mounting a footpath and striking the two adults and the child from behind. Authorities have stated they lack sufficient information to confirm if speed was a factor in the incident.
