Wildlife officers are on a mission to track a two-metre crocodile recently sighted near Inskip Point, south of K’gari, a notable deviation from its typical habitat. The crocodile has been moving southward rapidly, likely the same one previously observed in Bundaberg in January.

Authorities are actively seeking public assistance in this endeavour. They encourage anyone who spots what they believe to be the crocodile to report sightings ASAP, highlighting that local fishers and beachgoers provide valuable eyes for the search. Warning signs have been erected in areas surrounding Inskip Point to ensure public safety. Senior wildlife officer Joshua Morris noted that while the crocodile has evaded crowded spots so far, vigilance is still critical, especially around water.

Experts, including Professor Ross Dwyer, point out this crocodile’s unprecedented southern movement, suggesting it may be searching for food. Although Dwyer speculates that the animal is not a threat to people, he warns against getting too close, stressing the importance of looking after pets and friends. Should the crocodile remain in the area as conditions change, removal from the wild may be considered.
