At least 51 individuals, including 15 children, tragically lost their lives due to severe flooding in Kerr County, Texas, with the majority of fatalities occurring in this region notorious for flooding, situated in the state’s Hill Country. Kerr County reported 43 deaths, alongside four in Travis County, three in Burnet, and one in Kendall. The catastrophic flooding resulted from rapid rainfall that raised the Guadalupe River’s water levels by eight metres within just 45 minutes, washing away homes and vehicles.

Rescue operations faced significant challenges as volunteers and emergency services dealt with debris, including overturned cars and uprooted trees, while seeking survivors. Most victims were recovered near Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along the river. However, uncertainties linger regarding the number of missing persons, as several families ventured into the disaster zone despite pleas from authorities to refrain from doing so.

The situation grew dire as flash flood watches remained in effect and more rain fell. Search efforts involved helicopters, drones, and boats, leading to the successful rescue of over 850 people in the initial 36 hours. As recovery efforts continued, the community faced mounting concerns over whether adequate flood warnings had been issued and if sufficient preparations had been made given the region’s vulnerability to flooding.

Amidst the chaos, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared Sunday a day of prayer for the state, urging Texans to come together in remembrance of those lost, while Pope Leo XIV offered condolences to affected families globally. Survivors recounted harrowing experiences, with many swept away by powerful currents while others sought refuge in attics, clinging to hope as they watched the floodwaters rage.

Reports indicated that while some camps had prepared and moved attendees to safer ground, the unprecedented intensity of the rainfall caught many off guard, despite prior warnings from the National Weather Service. As investigations into the events unfold, the community grapples with its losses, particularly with the camp’s young attendees who were enjoying a holiday weekend filled with outdoor activities.

Local officials voiced their determination to support recovery efforts and have acknowledged that questions surrounding the adequacy of flood preparedness will inevitably arise as the community begins to rebuild.
