In a stunning display at the PGA Championship, world No.1 Scottie Scheffler delivered a game-changing moment with a masterful swing on the 14th hole at Quail Hollow. Positioned 278 metres from the hole, Scheffler, despite concerns about the wind affecting his shot, nailed it perfectly; his ball landed just under a metre from the pin. This eagle not only put him in the lead but also launched him into an impressive finish where he shot 5-under over the last five holes, concluding with a score of 6-under 65 and establishing a three-shot advantage.

Scheffler, reflecting on his performance, acknowledged that while execution is paramount, a touch of luck also plays a role in such long-distance shots. His dominance in the final stretch left competitors feeling overwhelmed, especially Bryson DeChambeau, who had a brief lead before faltering at the 17th hole. DeChambeau’s tee shot found water and he was distracted by the cheers from Scheffler’s fans as he attempted a lengthy bogey putt, which he ultimately missed, resulting in a double bogey that dashed his hopes.

Jon Rahm made a commendable effort with three consecutive birdies, but even he couldn’t keep pace with Scheffler’s surging score. DeChambeau, who had been playing remarkably well up until then, lamented the gusty conditions that cost him dearly, stating that the wind impacted his strategy on the last few holes. Despite finishing with a respectable 2-under 69, he was left rueing his missed opportunities.

As Scheffler approached the 18th, his determination was palpable. He struck an excellent 8-iron shot, sealing his remarkable day with a triumphant fist pump and a relieved cheer after a successful finish. He expressed surprise at his emotional response, attributing it to the significance of the moment in his round.

Australian Adam Scott continued to climb up the leaderboard, carding a steady 2-under 69 to reach 4-under overall, while Cam Davis also put in a notable performance despite a rocky start. Kiwi Ryan Fox’s round was mixed, but he remains in contention at 3-under for the tournament.

With Scheffler leading, all eyes will be on how competitors respond in the final stretches of the championship, as the tournament continues to unfold at Quail Hollow.
