An 11-year-old boy, Suhas Sunkisala, is urgently calling for a hit-and-run driver to step forward after a tragic incident left him injured while cycling home from school. On May 1, Suhas was hit by a vehicle as he approached a pedestrian crossing on Railway Parade in Murrumbeena. He recounted that as he entered the crossing after a car slowed down, it accelerated and collided with him.

Suhas described experiencing shock at first, which dulled the pain until he hit the ground, where he felt the full impact of his injuries. Fortunately, an off-duty nurse was on hand to assist him, and he was quickly transported to the hospital, suffering from a severely fractured ankle along with various cuts and bruises.

Authorities are currently searching for a silver Toyota Yaris hatchback, believed to have sustained damage, including a missing driver-side mirror, from the incident. Inspector Samantha Ferwerda expressed the disturbing nature of the event, noting that it’s hard to comprehend how the driver did not realise they had struck a child, and urged them to come forward, emphasising that evading responsibility will only complicate matters further.

Suhas spent two nights at the Royal Children’s Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery on his leg. He described the pain of his injury, clarifying that it was a compound fracture which resulted in his bone protruding. As a consequence of the accident, he faces at least six weeks of not being able to walk, forcing him to take a break from his favourite sports such as basketball, cricket, and skiing.

The police are appealing to the public for assistance, urging anyone who may have seen the incident or can identify the vehicle or driver to reach out to them or contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. Suhas’s desperate plea reflects the gravity of the situation, and the need for justice and accountability following such a distressing incident.
