The Matildas are optimistic about having key players Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler available for their upcoming home Asian Cup campaign in March. After a challenging draw held in Sydney, Australia finds itself in Group A with South Korea, Iran, and the Philippines. The Matildas will face South Korea first in Perth on March 1, a team that eliminated them from the last Asian Cup four years ago with a surprising 1-0 victory.

New coach Joe Montemurro expressed confidence regarding Kerr and Fowler’s potential return from injury. Kerr, who has been out of action since early 2024 due to multiple setbacks in her recovery from a long-term knee injury, is reportedly back training with Chelsea and is aiming to play in the Women’s Super League at the start of the new season. Montemurro highlighted the importance of not rushing her back into pre-season training.

Fowler has also been on the mend after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in April. Montemurro noted that she is currently in Sydney doing rehabilitation runs and is expected to join Manchester City in early October, with a hopeful return to full playing capability by November. He described Fowler as “a special player” with the ability to make significant contributions in crucial moments, underscoring her value to the team.

As the 2026 Asian Cup approaches, the Matildas’ fixture line-up includes matches against the Philippines on March 1 in Perth, Iran on March 5 at the Gold Coast, and South Korea on March 8 in Sydney. The return of both Kerr and Fowler could be pivotal in Australia’s quest for success in the tournament.
