Tesla’s Cybertruck has been hit with a significant recall, affecting almost all units on the road, marking the eighth such incident since customer deliveries began just over a year ago. The recall, issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), encompasses over 46,000 vehicles, alerting owners that an exterior panel along the windshield may detach while in motion, posing a serious hazard to other road users.

The recall focuses on a stainless steel component, known as the cant rail assembly, which connects the windshield and roof on both sides of the vehicle. This panel is attached with a structural adhesive, but the NHTSA has reported its intention to replace it with a more durable alternative that is less susceptible to environmental wear. Additional reinforcements will also be included in the fix.

Tesla has assured affected owners that the replacement will be conducted at no charge, with notification letters expected to be dispatched by May 19, 2025. The recall applies to all 2024 and 2025 models produced between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. The NHTSA confirmed that Tesla became aware of the issue earlier this year.

Compellingly, videos have surfaced on social media showing individuals easily removing these panels, garnering widespread attention. The Cybertruck, which began deliveries in late 2023, has faced multiple recalls for various safety issues within just 15 months, including a previous recall due to a faulty electric inverter affecting the vehicle’s power delivery.

In addition to these safety concerns, last April’s recall addressed stuck acceleration pedals, and other recalls have related to issues with windshield wipers and display screens. Despite the recalls, there have reportedly been no injuries linked to these problems.

The recent heightened scrutiny on Tesla comes amid various public attacks, many targeting the company directly. Reports indicate that prosecutors in Colorado charged an individual for vandalism against Tesla facilities, while another suspect was arrested in connection to arson at charging stations in South Carolina, raising concerns about the safety of Tesla’s infrastructure.

As global competition in the electric vehicle market intensifies, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, Tesla has faced notable challenges. Even prior to the latest recall announcement, Tesla’s shares had dipped significantly this year, reflecting a 42 per cent decline, as concerns over sales and competition loom large over the company.

Overall, while the Cybertruck has innovative prospects, the string of recalls showcases ongoing challenges for Tesla in ensuring the safety and reliability of its vehicles amidst a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
