Two young men, Sami Adnan, 22, and Luke Marko, 21, tragically lost their lives in a devastating single-vehicle accident in Paechtown, Adelaide Hills, shortly after 5pm on Echunga Road. Both were highly regarded athletes within the South Australian mixed martial arts (MMA) community and were returning home from a training session. Their passing has left their friends and mentors mourning the loss of not only talented sportspeople but also kind-hearted individuals.
Described by a close friend, Alec Burns, as inseparable, Adnan and Marko shared a deep bond, often referred to affectionately as the “three amigos.” Adnan was celebrated for his relentless spirit, embodying determination and selflessness. His MMA coach, Anthony Bynoe, recalled Adnan as a person whose compassion shone through, stating that he would readily give his jumper to others in need, highlighting his caring nature.
Conversely, Marko was hailed as a rising star in the sport, with his coach, Daniel Marinelli, reflecting on his character and maturity beyond his years. Marinelli emphasised that while accomplishments in MMA are noteworthy, it is ultimately Marko’s character that will be fondly remembered.
In the wake of this tragedy, friends have implored road users to exercise caution, with Burns expressing that such accidents can happen to anyone, leaving behind sorrow and heartbreak. As a memorial for the two, flowers have been placed at the crash site, marking a poignant tribute to their memory.
A police investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the MMA community continues to rally together in support of their grieving families and friends.
