Ryan Rickelton’s impressive debut century propelled South Africa to a decisive 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their Champions Trophy opener. Rickelton scored 103 runs off 106 balls, contributing to South Africa’s total of 6-315, with four of the top five batsmen reaching half-centuries. On a pitch with evident cracks, the South African pace attack thrived, ultimately dismissing Afghanistan for 208 in just 43.3 overs.

This victory marked the end of a six-match ODI losing streak for South Africa. Captain Temba Bavuma commended the team’s “clinical performance,” noting that while they won the toss and chose to bat, their decision was bold given the pitch condition. Despite the absence of Heinrich Klaasen due to injury, Rassie van der Dussen stepped up with a quick-fire 52 runs.

Afghanistan struggled against the South African pace bowlers, particularly Kagiso Rabada, who took 3-36, and Lungi Ngidi, who added 2-56. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi acknowledged their batting failures, but highlighted Rahmat Shah’s 90 runs as a silver lining. As Afghanistan looks to rebound, they have two more matches in the tournament to regain their form. Meanwhile, Australia faces England in their upcoming match on Saturday.
