Ryan Matterson, a forward for the Eels, is set to join the Warrington Wolves on a loan deal for the remainder of the season, under the guidance of coach Sam Burgess. The 30-year-old, who previously played for New South Wales, has seen limited action in first grade this year, primarily due to injuries and time spent in reserve grade.
Earlier this season, the Eels granted Matterson the opportunity to negotiate with other clubs; however, he was unable to secure an NRL team. Now, he is heading to the Super League for a short period, despite having one more year on his contract with the Eels, which is valued at approximately $700,000.
Mark O’Neill, the Eels’ general manager, shared that this move opens the door for Matterson to embrace new challenges and gain valuable experience in English rugby. If he doesn’t find a permanent position elsewhere, he may return to the Eels next season.
Throughout his career, which includes a premiership with the Roosters, Matterson has accumulated 181 first-grade appearances across multiple positions. His arrival at Warrington is expected to enhance a squad that has faced difficulties in the main competition this season, although they recently reached the Challenge Cup final.
In related news, rookie fullback Isaiah Iongi will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a broken hand. Iongi has made a significant impact this year and is considered a strong contender for the Dally M Rookie of the Year award, along with fellow players Leka Halasima and Mark Nawaqanitawase.
