Rugby league legend Sam Backo, renowned for his unique talents and vibrant personality, has passed away at the age of 64, as confirmed by the ARL Commission. Backo had been dealing with significant health issues in recent times before his death.

A formidable front-rower, Backo made his mark by playing 116 matches for the Canberra Raiders and 20 for the Brisbane Broncos between 1983 and 1990. Furthermore, his impressive career included representing Queensland on seven occasions and contributing to the Australian team in six Tests. ARLC chairman Peter V’landys lauded him as a “one-of-a-kind footballer,” highlighting his tenacity and iconic status within the sport.

In 1988, Backo famously scored tries in all three Ashes Tests against Great Britain, solidifying his reputation as an outstanding player. He was also celebrated as a member of the Indigenous Team of the Century, reflecting his significant impact on rugby league. Beyond his athletic prowess, Backo was a compassionate individual dedicated to advocating for Indigenous health and welfare.
