US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has voiced full support for Israel’s military objectives in the Gaza Strip, insisting that Hamas “must be eradicated,” thereby casting doubt on the future of the fragile ceasefire. During a recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Rubio discussed US plans related to the region amidst expected criticism from Arab leaders.

Netanyahu endorsed a controversial proposal by former President Donald Trump, which involves relocating the Palestinian population in Gaza for redevelopment under US oversight. Netanyahu warned of dire consequences if Hamas does not release remaining hostages taken during the October 7 attack.

As the first phase of the ceasefire approaches its end, negotiations for a second stage—where Hamas would free hostages for Palestinian prisoners—remain unresolved. Rubio’s strong rhetoric may hinder talks with Hamas, even as the group maintains control over Gaza despite considerable losses. Recent Israeli airstrikes have been described by Hamas as violations of the ceasefire.

Amid the geopolitical tensions, Arab leaders are grappling with limited options, fearing that any alignment with Israel might spark domestic backlash. In a bid to seek Arab cooperation for a postwar plan, Rubio is set to visit key regional players like the UAE and Saudi Arabia but has notably omitted Egypt and Qatar from his itinerary.
