A highly anticipated auction featuring rare and antique coins, banknotes, and regalia kicks off in Brisbane tomorrow, hosted by Roxbury’s Auction House. Over the past three months, the auction house has meticulously valued and catalogued approximately 2,500 items in preparation for the three-day event.
Each item available showcases a unique narrative of history, particularly highlighting Australia’s significant moments. Notably, the auction includes the extraordinary ‘Rainbow Pound’, a rare piece limited to just 32 in existence, which was issued as an emergency measure during the World War I currency shortages.
Another featured item is the Holey Dollar, Australia’s first minted coin, which is estimated to fetch over a thousand dollars. Scott Waterman from Roxbury’s explains that the Holey Dollar was created from a Spanish Eight Real, as colonisation led to a currency deficit, prompting the Spanish to introduce these coins.
In addition to coins, the auction will offer a variety of notes, statues, and military regalia, providing a diverse collection for bidders. The entire auction will take place online, allowing participants from across the nation to place bids conveniently from their homes.
