Following the NSW Waratahs’ recent defeat to the Crusaders, captain Jake Gordon expressed that it was the most disappointing loss of his career. The match, held at Allianz Stadium, ended 48-33, leaving the Waratahs struggling in eighth place with a 5-7 record. This setback follows a promising start to the season under coach Dan McKellar, who is now anticipating an overhaul of the squad after last year’s wooden spoon finish.
In March, star prop Angus Bell noted the team had the potential to excel, but the recent performance has highlighted significant issues. Gordon, who has captained since 2021 and represented the Wallabies 108 times, described this particular loss as familiar yet frustrating. He pointed to systemic problems that have affected team performance over time, expressing discontent with the team’s inability to maintain home field advantage.
McKellar, a well-respected coach with prior success at the ACT Brumbies, echoed concerns about player commitment and performance standards. He indicated that several players may be released from the team if they fail to meet expectations, emphasising the need for a professional attitude from the outset of every match. He remarked that while some players show determination, others may be too complacent, undermining efforts to lift the team’s overall standards.
As the season nears its conclusion, the Waratahs face challenging away matches against the Western Force and the defending champions, the Blues. In contrast, the Crusaders, coached by Rob Penney—who previously managed the Waratahs—are thriving this season and currently sit second in the standings with a 9-3 record.
Penney praised his team’s performance amidst a challenging week, while also making a light-hearted remark about Wallabies veteran James O’Connor’s impressive return to form. As the Waratahs look to make significant changes, the focus now turns to improving performance and achieving consistency in the closing matches of the season.
