A recent study by the University of Queensland is exploring the potential therapeutic benefits of robotic pets for individuals with dementia, suggesting they may provide similar emotional and social support to that of traditional furry companions. Wei Qi Ko, the lead researcher, highlights the positive effects animals typically have on mood enhancement and reduction of agitation, and believes robotic alternatives could deliver comparable advantages.

Designed to replicate the behaviours of real pets through movement and sounds, these robotic animals are not only more economical but also more accessible, with some models priced around $250. Early observations from Cooinda House, an aged care facility near Redcliffe in Queensland, indicate that residents are already experiencing the positive influence of robotic pets on their social interactions and emotional wellbeing.

Staff member Tracy Carroll notes that these robotic companions are facilitating better connections among residents, fostering socialisation within the facility. Debbie Macquarie shared a heartwarming account of her mother, June, who has been positively affected by a robotic golden retriever named Daisy. Growing up on a farm, June’s interaction with Daisy has seemingly rekindled feelings of purpose and joy, according to Macquarie. She expressed that the response from her mother has been wonderful and suggested that these robotic pets may help restore personal meaning in the lives of their users, underlining a fundamental human need for connection and purpose.

This innovative approach to dementia care could pave the way for broader use of robotic animals in healthcare settings, potentially addressing the emotional needs of residents while fostering community and companionship.
