In a groundbreaking first, Liverpool Hospital in Sydney has successfully conducted a trial using a robotic system to assist in the treatment of heart attack patients. The preliminary findings indicate a promising future for this innovative technology. Among the patients treated was 59-year-old Scott Barraclough, who had an 80 per cent blockage in one of his arteries but did not experience chest pain; rather, he felt general exhaustion and discomfort.

The robotic arm plays a crucial role in this pioneering procedure, taking over the delivery of wires, stents, and balloons to the heart after an incision made manually by a surgeon. This allows the physician to control the robotic arm from a separate room, significantly reducing their exposure to radiation and enhancing their visualisation of the heart structures during the procedure.

Professor Craig Juergens noted the advantages of this system, allowing doctors to work outside the radiation zone while also improving precision in heart treatments. Dr James Leung supported this, pointing out that better visibility allows for more accurate procedures.

The trial included 148 patients, all of whom, including Barraclough, remained awake throughout the operations. He expressed satisfaction with the experience, stating that the process felt seamless. Importantly, every procedure was completed without complications.

The complete findings from this trial are expected to be revealed at an upcoming international conference, with indications that both patients and physicians could benefit from the reduced radiation exposure and enhanced accuracy associated with robotic assistance in heart treatments.
