Robert Whittaker, the former UFC middleweight champion, has announced his intentions to return to the octagon mid-year and has indicated that Sean Strickland is likely to be his next opponent. In a recent interview on the On Paper Podcast, the 34-year-old Australian revealed that he aims to compete again in June, potentially coinciding with International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Whittaker, who last fought in October and faced a tough defeat against Khamzat Chimaev, has taken time off to regroup and is now gradually preparing to reclaim his spot in the title race. He commented on his recent training, stating, “I’ve been working on some things and some new skill sets,” emphasizing his commitment to returning in peak condition.

As one of Australia’s most prominent mixed martial artists, Whittaker holds a professional record of 26 wins and 8 losses. He was the first fighter from Australia to win a championship in the UFC, solidifying his place in the sport’s history.

Regarding potential opponents, Whittaker expressed interest in battling Sean Strickland, noting that they have been “circling each other” in the rankings for some time without being matched up. He sees this fight as a significant opportunity, stating, “I think Strickland makes a good argument,” and added that he finds Strickland’s fighting style intriguing.

Strickland recently fought at UFC 312 in Sydney, where he lost to Dricus Du Plessis in the middleweight title bout, but remains a tough and respected competitor in the division. Whittaker’s enthusiasm for a matchup against Strickland underscores his intention to re-establish himself among the elite fighters in the middleweight category.

As preparations continue, Whittaker is focused on his training and returning to fight readiness, aiming to show his best self when he steps back into the cage later this year.
