Shane Herring, a prominent figure in Australian surfing, has passed away at the age of 53 following an accident at his home. Known for his remarkable talent, Herring was often compared to the legendary American surfer Kelly Slater. According to reports from Surfing Life Magazine and Swell Net, he suffered a fatal fall down the stairs on Sunday.

Born in 1971 on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Herring began his surfing journey in Dee Why. His innovative approach to surfing significantly impacted the sport during the early ’90s, alongside Slater, reshaping surfing techniques and styles. In a highlight of his career, Herring triumphantly defeated Slater at the inaugural Coca-Cola Classic world championship tour held at North Narrabeen in 1992. Unfortunately, his competitive ranking plummeted in the following years, and by 1995, he was unranked, grappling with personal struggles including addiction.

After his competitive career, Herring chose a quieter life on the North Coast, occasionally surfing with friends and shaping surfboards until his untimely death. Slater paid tribute to Herring on social media, acknowledging their shared experiences in surfing while highlighting Herring’s blend of traditional power and new-age speed. Slater described him as a kind person who faced his inner demons, noting Herring’s discomfort with fame and scrutiny. He expressed sorrow over the loss, lamenting that they would not reunite, having not seen each other for over two decades.

Surfing World Magazine hailed Herring as one of Australia’s most exceptional surfing talents, referring to him as a “happy tragic figure” whose career, while brief, was intensely vibrant. Justin Crawford, a close friend, remembered him fondly as a true gentleman who maintained a positive outlook. Crawford expressed gratitude for their friendship, celebrating Herring’s unique personality.

In closing, Slater remarked, “Ride on, Shane. We’re thinking of ya,” paying homage to Herring’s legacy in the surfing community. Herring’s contributions to the sport will not be forgotten, and he is remembered fondly by fellow surfers and fans alike.
