Raiders’ head coach, Ricky Stuart, has been lauded for his effective coaching following a heated exchange with winger Savelio Tamale, who made an unusual decision to halt his run just before scoring. With 11 minutes left in the first half and the Raiders leading 6-4, Tamale capitalised on a loose ball near the halfway line but inexplicably slowed to a stop near the try line, where he was tackled by Rabbitohs’ Cody Walker. Although Tamale managed to get the ball down for a try, Walker reacted by angrily punching the ball in frustration.
Television commentator Matt Russell questioned Tamale’s decision, asking, “What is he thinking there?” suggesting it was hard to justify such a move unless it was due to an injury. Stuart, keen to address the situation, immediately called Tamale over to express his displeasure. Teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves acknowledged Stuart’s feedback, recognising the importance of the coach’s guidance.
Cooper Cronk also highlighted the coaching excellence displayed by Stuart, labelling Tamale’s antics as “show-off-manship”. Despite this moment of individual flair from Tamale, the Raiders maintained control of the match, with Kaeo Weekes and Hudson Young scoring additional tries to extend their lead to 24-4 by half-time.
The Rabbitohs, under the strategic influence of coach Wayne Bennett, regrouped during the break and came out strong. Notable contributions from Cody Walker, Jamie Humphreys, and Latrell Mitchell saw South Sydney close the gap to 24-22 by the 57th minute. However, the Raiders responded with further tries from Weekes and Ethan Strange, while Souths kept the pressure on with scores from Alex Johnston and Jack Wighton, leading to a thrilling finale that concluded with the Raiders narrowly winning 36-34.
The match wasn’t without its setbacks for South Sydney, as fullback Jye Gray exited in the first half due to an AC joint injury, seen sporting a sling after the game. The Raiders ultimately celebrated a crucial victory despite a spirited comeback attempt from the Rabbitohs.
