Queensland’s court system is set to undergo significant reforms aimed at modernising the way defendants and their lawyers can participate in proceedings. Proposed changes to the Justices Act will permit virtual appearances, making the process more accessible and efficient.

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has emphasised the importance of these reforms, stating they represent a leap into the 21st century for Queensland’s justice system. The recommendations arise from a review that aims to streamline court processes, potentially allowing defendants to attend their hearings via video call rather than physically appearing in court.

Defendants, like Jake, who have faced numerous court appearances, are optimistic about this potential shift. Jake noted that the ability to resolve issues from home would be incredibly beneficial for people who may forget their court dates. Beau, another defendant, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that participating from home would save time and prevent the frustration of waiting around in court unnecessarily.

Despite the positive reception from those directly affected, Frecklington made it clear that the proposed changes do not alter the fundamental principles of justice. She reinforced that individuals committing crimes will still face appropriate consequences, stating, “If you commit the crime, you’re gonna do the time.”

While there is optimism surrounding these changes, it is important to note that no final decisions have been made yet. The details regarding who may be eligible to appear virtually remain uncertain, and significant legislative adjustments will be necessary before any new procedures can take effect. Frecklington has acknowledged that implementing these changes will require time and careful consideration of the logistical aspects involved in virtual court appearances.
