The Victorian government has initiated a review of the public sector, which is expected to result in the loss of thousands of jobs. Premier Jacinta Allan and Treasurer Jaclyn Symes announced that Helen Silver will lead this review, with findings due by June 30. Reports suggest that around six per cent of the public workforce could be affected, equating to approximately 3,000 job cuts.
However, Allan assured that frontline services such as teaching, nursing, policing, and child protection would not be impacted by these reductions, as the government intends to prioritise support in these areas. The aim of the review is to scrutinise government expenditures with the same diligence as households manage their own finances, according to Allan.
Symes noted that difficult decisions lie ahead as the review progresses, highlighting the challenge of balancing budgetary constraints with the need to maintain essential services. The government’s actions signal a significant shift in approach as it seeks to ensure fiscal responsibility while still prioritising community needs.
