Residents north of Perth have received urgent evacuation orders due to an out-of-control bushfire threatening lives and property in the Ledge Point area. The Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued a morning emergency warning, advising those within the boundaries of Old Ledge Point Road to the north, Indian Ocean Drive to the east, Bennies Road to the south, and the coastal line to the west, to leave the area immediately.
Authorities emphasise the seriousness of the situation, stressing that there is a significant risk to both lives and homes. Residents are directed to exit towards the east along Ledge Point Road, proceeding north towards Lancelin if it is safe. An evacuation centre has been established at the Lancelin Community Sports Centre for those who require assistance.
For individuals unable to evacuate, the advice is to seek shelter immediately, while those who are away from their residences have been warned that returning home is too perilous. The bushfire ignited around 1 am (AEWT) and is advancing uncontrollably towards the townsite of Ledge Point, moving in a west-northwest direction.
Additionally, a watch and act warning has been issued for a separate fire southeast of Ledge Point, near the eastern sections of Yeal Nature Reserve. This warning affects an area bordered by Sullivan Road to the north, Brand Highway to the east, and Airfield Road to the south, including parts of Bambun, Coonabidgee, and Yeal. This fire presents another potential threat to lives and homes, having already consumed approximately 1092 hectares and continuing its advance in a northwesterly direction.
The region is currently experiencing heightened fire danger conditions, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s, further exacerbating the risk of bushfire incidents. Community members are urged to remain alert and adhere closely to official advice as the situation develops.
