A severe bushfire is currently threatening homes in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, igniting fears as erratic winds and extreme heat contribute to the danger. The fire, located at Dr Ken Leversha Reserve in Montrose, has prompted a “Watch and Act” alert due to its rapid spread through dense, dry bushland. Residents of Montrose and Kilsyth are advised by the Country Fire Authority to prepare for potential evacuation, as the flames are advancing towards properties situated to the south and east of the reserve, some as close as 50 to 100 metres from the blaze.

The fire broke out around 2pm today and has since consumed over eight hectares. A significant firefighting operation is underway, involving more than 40 fire engines and three helicopters as crews work fervently to establish containment lines and safeguard properties. Country Fire Authority chief officer Alen Slijepcevic stated that the priority is ensuring the safety of homes in the vicinity of the fire.

The forecast brings additional challenges for firefighters, as strong westerly winds are expected to intensify the blaze and complicate containment efforts. With temperatures in Melbourne soaring to the mid-30s today and a high fire danger warning in effect across Victoria, the situation remains precarious. Notably, Horsham experienced even higher temperatures, reaching 39 degrees.

As residents face this alarming threat, the outlook shows a possible respite with predicted temperatures dropping to 26 degrees tomorrow, accompanied by a chance of rain. However, the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.
