The beloved Australian children’s series Bluey may offer more than mere entertainment, according to experts. Researchers from CQUniversity suggest that the adventures of the animated blue heeler family could help children develop long-term resilience, which is crucial for mental health throughout life.

Kelly Bohl, a mental health practitioner from Townsville, analysed 150 episodes of Bluey and discovered that approximately half of them demonstrate behaviours that foster resilience. Notably, two-thirds of these examples originate from the show’s parents, showcasing how modelling positive behaviours can teach children to cope with various challenges.

Bohl emphasises that resilience—the ability to navigate adversity—is a vital skill developed during childhood. "Cultivating a resilient mindset early on can empower individuals to face difficulties throughout their lives," she stated.

Many viewers, including adults, have observed the show’s strong themes of emotional strength and recovery. Bohl encourages parents to engage with their children during viewings, discussing the ways in which they can learn resilience together, much like the characters in the show.

Since its debut on ABC Kids in 2018, Bluey has become an international hit, garnering numerous accolades including BAFTA and Emmy awards. It was also the most-watched TV series in the USA last year, accumulating over 842 million hours of viewing time. This popularity underscores the show’s impact not just in providing entertainment, but in potentially equipping young audiences with the skills they need for future challenges.
