Research uncovers the effects of extended childcare hours on children

Recent research indicates that extended hours in childcare can jeopardise children’s emotional development and learning capabilities. The study, involving 274,000 children across Australia from birth until their first year of school, suggests a notable correlation between long exposure to childcare and social-emotional challenges, particularly for those attending lower-quality facilities for over 30 hours weekly.

For children enrolled in such environments, there is a heightened risk of difficulties in social competence and emotional maturity compared to their peers who don’t engage in formal childcare settings. Experts attribute these concerns, in part, to high staff turnover rates in childcare centres, which disrupt the continuity of relationships that are crucial for healthy brain development and secure attachments.

However, the conversation around childcare is nuanced. While extensive time in inferior childcare may pose risks, keeping children at home isn’t always the best solution either. In certain cases, particularly for disadvantaged children, those from single-parent families, or those with a non-English language background, childcare can offer invaluable opportunities for development and socialisation.

In response to these findings, the Albanese government introduced measures earlier this year to enhance childcare support, ensuring that eligible families receive three days of subsidised childcare each week. While this initiative is a positive step for many families, parent advocacy groups emphasize the urgent need for an intensified focus on improving quality within the childcare sector. Given that reducing childcare hours isn’t feasible for numerous working parents, a commitment to bettering the quality of care is paramount to support the emotional and educational well-being of children.
