The Penrith Panthers demonstrated their championship potential once more by defeating the Cronulla Sharks 28-22 in Las Vegas. Despite facing early challenges, including winger Casey McLean’s departure for a head injury assessment just three minutes into the match, the Panthers bounced back.

Cronulla opened the scoring through Jesse Ramien, who capitalised on a defensive lapse from Penrith, exploiting Luke Garner’s unfamiliar position in the centre. The Panthers responded in the 26th minute with Isaah Yeo scoring, followed by Izack Tago extending their lead shortly after. Despite a strong finish to the first half from Cronulla, with Briton Nikora scoring to bring the score to 12-10 at halftime in favour of Penrith, the Panthers regrouped quickly in the second half.

Daine Laurie and Paul Alamoti, who touched down after a well-executed play involving Nathan Cleary and Dylan Edwards, helped Penrith stretch their lead. Commentator Andrew Johns confidently asserted that the Panthers would be contenders come season’s end. However, Cronulla, undeterred by the deficit, clawed back with a try from Kayal Iro, followed by a powerful effort from new recruit Addin Fonua-Blake to narrow the score to 24-22.

The match concluded with Laurie scoring again, sealing the victory for Penrith. While coach Billy Slater noted some rustiness in Penrith’s play, he also highlighted their resilience and determination, qualities that remain integral to their success. Cleary echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the performance as somewhat lacking in sharpness, while also expressing concerns over injuries, particularly the early exit of McLean and Isaiah Papali’i, who left the field with a facial injury.

Overall, the Panthers’ ability to hold off a late challenge from Cronulla illustrates their depth and tenacity as they continue their premiership pursuit.
