A recent discovery at a school in central Queensland has thrilled paleontologists with the unearthing of a rock featuring the largest collection of dinosaur footprints ever found on a single surface. This exceptional stone, containing 66 tracks, was excavated from a local mine and offers a glimpse into the world of dinosaurs from around 200 million years ago.

Notably, the footprints bear resemblance to those previously discovered in areas near Rockhampton and Roma, underscoring their historical significance. Anthony Romilio, a palaeontologist from the University of Queensland, expressed his excitement by stating that nearly 50 dinosaurs left their marks on this rock, making it the most extensive collection found on one block. Unlike finding skeletal remains, which only provides insights into the dinosaurs after they had died, footprints reveal live behaviours, offering a more dynamic understanding of their existence.

Originally discovered two decades ago, the rock’s importance went largely unnoticed for years, spending almost 17 years in the foyer of Biloela State High School before experts were brought in to assess it. Romilio stated he felt fortunate to have been contacted about the discovery, allowing him to bring its significance to public attention.

The footprints are believed to have been formed in what was once a shallow river where these dinosaurs roamed. Analysis suggests that the creatures were relatively small; some species were about 30 centimetres tall, while others reached nearly a metre in height. Many of these footprints span a wide area within Queensland, indicating a diverse ecosystem. Romilio noted that similar types of footprints have been found in locations like Carnarvon Gorge and Mount Morgan, suggesting that these dinosaurs had a broad geographic range.

This remarkable stone serves as a snapshot of life’s vibrant past and highlights the ongoing importance of paleontological research in uncovering the history of our planet and its ancient inhabitants.
