Spanish search and rescue teams have located the body of a missing American hiker, Cole Henderson, aged 27, in the Pyrenees. His remains were discovered on the challenging north face of Monte Perdido, Spain’s third-highest peak, as confirmed by the Guardia Civil on Tuesday.
Henderson went missing after informing friends on July 9 that he intended to hike in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in Huesca. His last message indicated he was switching his phone to aeroplane mode after parking his car, which was later found in the vicinity. Concern grew when he failed to catch his flight back to the Netherlands on July 12, leading to an official search commencing on July 14.
The search operation utilised specialised mountain rescue teams and helicopters from the Air Service to scour the region. However, the area where Henderson’s body was found presented significant accessibility challenges, necessitating the use of a crane to retrieve him.
Authorities speculate that Henderson may have attempted to climb Monte Perdido, which rises to 3,355 metres. The ascent is categorised as “Peu Difficile” (PD), indicating it is somewhat challenging and might require climbing gear due to its steep and icy sections. Reports indicated that the customary route from Torla, where Henderson’s vehicle was parked, was still obstructed by snow in early July.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities in mountainous terrains, particularly when conditions are unpredictable. The search and rescue efforts displayed remarkable skill and dedication, concluding a heartbreaking chapter for Henderson’s family and friends.
