Daly Cherry-Evans is reportedly set to join the Sydney Roosters, with Brandon Smith stating that the deal is “signed and delivered.” Smith, who has been labelled “unwanted,” is on track to move to the Rabbitohs ahead of schedule, creating salary cap space for Cherry-Evans’ acquisition.

When asked about the funds that may go towards Cherry-Evans, Smith indicated he suspected that might be the case but expressed a preference for that money to benefit younger players within the club. He emphasised the importance of supporting emerging talent, as players like Naufahu Whyte and Blake Steep will likely demand pay rises upon concluding their contracts after next season. Smith noted that he and fellow winger Dominic Young will also leave the Roosters, with Young being free to negotiate with other clubs.

During an interview on 2GB’s Wide World of Sports Radio, Smith confirmed that while he is still officially a Rooster, he has played his last game for the club. He shared feelings of being unwanted rather than unloved, stating he is excited about the opportunities that await him at the Rabbitohs. According to Smith, the Roosters haven’t adequately explained their decision to move on from him, describing their eagerness to part ways as saving money for upcoming seasons.

Smith also addressed his potential collaboration with Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett, despite turning him down previously for the Dolphins. He feels any past issues have been resolved, regarding them as “water off a duck’s back.” Bennett acknowledged to the press that he doesn’t expect to fully harness Smith’s capabilities until at least the end of 2025, as Smith continues his recovery from an ACL injury. Smith interpreted this as a demonstration of Bennett’s supportive leadership.

In summary, as Cherry-Evans prepares to transition to the Roosters, Smith is ready for a fresh start with the Rabbitohs, all while stressing the importance of investing in the club’s future talent.
