Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles recently shared a profound experience he had while visiting Pozières, a site of significant historical importance during World War I where his grandfather, Percy Pearce, demonstrated remarkable bravery. In 2022, accompanied by a local historian, Marles visited the very location where his grandfather earned the Military Cross for his gallantry during the Battle of Pozières in 1916.
Recalling his experience, Marles initially thought it might be a joke but soon realised the gravity of the history before him as the historian recounted the battle’s events. He found himself overwhelmed with emotion, revealing that both he and the Chief of Defence Force were moved to tears by the powerful narratives surrounding the harrowing moments of the conflict, particularly the intense fear and chaos as Australian soldiers retreated under heavy German fire.
Marles described his grandfather’s courage in rallying the troops amid the mayhem, maintaining their position despite the dire circumstances. This heroic act, where lives were counted in mere meters, left a lasting impression on Marles, who expressed immense pride in his grandfather’s legacy and the importance of witnessing this historical site.
The Battle of Pozières was a crucial yet devastating chapter in World War I, resulting in around 23,000 Australian casualties, including 6,800 fatalities, over just a few weeks. Despite the horrors he faced, Marles noted that his grandfather was not one to speak about his wartime experiences. He has personal memories of his grandfather, recalling their time together watching cricket, which made the visit to Pozières even more poignant for him.
In a separate context, Marles addressed recent incidents of public outrage during Anzac Day commemorations, affirming that while he understands the feelings of discontent, he refrains from giving attention to those provoking negativity. He described the day’s services as beautiful and filled with dignity, highlighting the significance of remembering those who served.
Through both his personal history and current responsibilities, Marles continues to honour the sacrifices made by past generations, reflecting on the complex emotions intertwined with remembrance and the legacies left by family members who served in the armed forces.
