After a dismal start to the season, Cowboys coach Todd Payten has issued a stark warning to his players following their heavy defeat to Manly. The North Queensland team suffered a lopsided loss at Brookvale Oval, with the Sea Eagles scoring three tries within the first ten minutes and ultimately winning 42-12.
In the aftermath of the match, Payten expressed his disappointment, particularly regarding the preparation of certain players ahead of their season opener. He highlighted the need for individual accountability during his post-match press conference, stating, “I spoke about some of our individuals being off the mark.” He urged his team to reflect on their mental and physical readiness and indicated that there would be further discussions on the matter.
Payten emphasised the importance of discipline, referencing the Cowboys’ significant disparity in both possession and tackling statistics. By half-time, the Cowboys had completed 142 tackles compared to Manly’s 54, indicating a lack of control and rhythm in their play. He remarked, “We gave away some dumb penalties,” as he outlined the dramatic 70 per cent possession held by Manly in the early stages of the game.
As the team prepares for their upcoming match against the Sharks in Townsville, Payten has urged his players to commit to hard work and unity, expressing a desire for them to come back ready to improve. The atmosphere in the camp will be pivotal as they look to rectify their mistakes and regain form following the disappointing performance.
