Wildlife rangers in Queensland are looking into a disturbing incident involving a crocodile found with what appears to be a spear or arrow embedded in its head. The injured saltwater crocodile was spotted at Cape Tribulation on February 20, prompting rangers to investigate the area, though they were unable to locate the creature.
Authorities confirmed that the crocodile has suffered severe injuries due to the impalement. Simon Booth, an official from the Department of Environment, Science, Tourism and Innovation, expressed concern for the animal’s wellbeing, stating that the crocodile is likely experiencing extreme pain. If the animal is captured, there might be a necessity for euthanasia, depending on the severity of its injuries.
Booth conveyed the outrage felt by officials, emphasising the cruelty involved in such actions and stating that Queenslanders do not condone animal cruelty. He condemned the deliberate targeting of native wildlife, reinforcing that such behaviour is completely unacceptable. The law reflects this sentiment, with penalties for harming or killing crocodiles reaching up to $36,000.
Officials are calling on the public to assist in their investigation by providing any information related to this incident.
