Blake Solly, the CEO of South Sydney Rabbitohs, has firmly stated that legendary coach Wayne Bennett will not be leaving the club, amidst speculations regarding offers from other teams, including the Kangaroos. At 75, Bennett is in the early stages of his second tenure with the Rabbitohs, having signed a three-year contract that will keep him until at least the end of the 2027 season. Despite the team facing significant injury challenges, Bennett has revitalised the club, leading to improved performance on the field.

Rumours linking Bennett to potential coaching roles elsewhere have intensified, especially as Mal Meninga is expected to take the reins of the newly established Perth Bears by 2027. Additionally, the NRL plans to introduce a franchise in Papua New Guinea the following year. Although Bennett’s potential involvement with the PNG club has been discussed, the timeline of his current contract with Souths makes such a move unlikely.

In an interview with 2GB, Solly dismissed any suggestions that Bennett might pursue other coaching positions, asserting, “No whispers.” He acknowledged the admiration that Peter V’landys, the NRL chairman, has for Bennett, suggesting that V’landys would love for Bennett to lead the new PNG franchise, similar to his role with the Dolphins.

Solly conveyed a strong message about retaining Bennett, stating, “We will be fighting pretty hard to keep him.” He expressed intent to meet with Bennett after the current season to discuss extending his contract, highlighting Bennett’s significant impact since returning to the Rabbitohs and anticipating a future collaboration.

While Bennett may not be heading to Papua New Guinea, reports suggest he could take up the Kangaroos coaching position for the upcoming Ashes series. Therefore, even if Bennett assumes the national role, he would continue to operate as the Rabbitohs’ head coach.

Other contenders such as Brad Fittler and Cameron Smith have emerged as potential successors for Meninga should he vacate his position following his new commitment with the Perth Bears. Nonetheless, Solly remains resolute in Bennett’s continued involvement with the Rabbitohs, hoping for a long-term relationship beyond the current contract.
