Queensland’s inaugural free supermarket, Serving Our People, has recently launched its third community supermarket in Beenleigh, signifying a significant development in aiding individuals facing financial hardships. This expansion aims to offer vital support to those in need by providing a variety of essential goods. The supermarket’s inventory is stocked with fresh produce, frozen meals, meats, household items, and non-perishable products.

Founder Yas Matbouly emphasised the importance of providing free food to those in financial strife, noting that simply reducing food prices doesn’t fully address the challenges of food insecurity. Matbouly stated, “The whole idea, when we started with People’s Market, is to help people who are struggling from food insecurity.”

Shoppers can access the supermarket once a week, choosing up to 15 items at no cost. The charity’s existing outlets at Mermaid Beach and Logan operate from 9 am to 3 pm, with potential extensions of hours depending on community demand. So far, over 5,000 individuals utilise the service weekly, indicating a strong need within the community.

Logan Mayor Jon Raven has expressed his support for the initiative, emphasising its significance for residents affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, enabling them to obtain necessary supplies.

For those wishing to contribute to this essential cause, support can be given through donations or by volunteering via the Serving Our People website. With its commitment to alleviating food insecurity, Serving Our People continues to play a critical role in supporting Queensland’s most vulnerable populations.
